WHITBY, ON – Regional Council passed Durham Region Transit’s (DRT) 2019 budget, which continues to build on improvements introduced in 2018. Highlights include:
- More service: nearly 8,000 net additional service hours over a 12-month period spanning 2019-2020, including more service on DRT’s busiest routes and expanding OnDemand service in the north.
- More coverage: more homes, schools and work locations are within walking distance of a bus stop as service expands to new growth areas throughout the Region.
- More savings: starting May 1, 2019 children aged 12 and under will ride free when travelling with a fare paying passenger, and once again this summer, youth (ages 13-19) monthly passes are 2-for-1 for July and August. Otherwise, all DRT fares will remain the same again this year, except for adult and youth single trips paid either with PRESTO or a paper ticket, which will see a nominal increase of five cents. There is no change to the cash or co-fares, and the best value, all-you-can-ride monthly passes remain the same for adults, youth and seniors.
“DRT’s 2019 budget reflects Regional Council’s commitment to investing in transit by providing new service and fare incentives,” says Regional Chair John Henry.
“This approved budget reflects DRT strategic priorities that focus on our customers: more service, more coverage, more value,” adds Vincent Patterson, DRT General Manager.
“This budget supports our younger generation by providing new attractive fare initiatives: kids 12 and under ride free, and the youth 2-for-1 summer pass,” says Shaun Collier, Chair of the Transit Executive Committee and Mayor of Ajax.
