The conclusion of the Whitby Autonomous Vehicle Electric (WAVE) shuttle pilot was announced at the Transit Executive Committee meeting on February 2, 2022

Ride the WAVE

The Whitby Autonomous Vehicle Electric (WAVE) shuttle is a pilot project to learn how autonomous technologies can contribute to safer, more sustainable and connected transit operations. The WAVE service is operating as DRT Route 300 (300 Port Whitby WAVE), with a trained safety attendant on board at all times.

Please Note: The shuttle is currently not operating.

As we continue to pilot the WAVE, please be advised that DRT Route 300 schedule changes and service disruptions due to inclement weather (including rain and snow) are possible. The pilot project is aided by more than 50 pieces of smart infrastructure, including sensors, visual and audio signals installed along the route. As we learn about the shuttle’s vehicle performance in a range of weather conditions, safety is our top priority.

When riding the WAVE, please note:

  • Face coverings are mandatory
  • Only four passengers are permitted at a time
  • Seat belts must be worn when on board—shuttle can make frequent and sudden stops
  • Passengers must be at least eight years old and able to travel without a child safety seat (child safety seats cannot be accommodated on the shuttle)
  • There is no charge to ride the WAVE, however regular fares will apply when connecting to DRT or GO Transit services

DRT On Demand service will be available in the Port Whitby area should the WAVE be unable to operate due to weather conditions. On Demand trips can be booked through the DRT On Demand app or by calling 1-866-247-0055 (passengers with young children under eight years of age are asked to call this number to arrange a ride in the Port Whitby area).
